Cries of “We must be mad” and “Why do we do it?” echoed around the cold, dark Unibol stadium car park as we assembled for the trip to the Lion’s Den in East London.
Not wanting to miss the next goal or the start of the fightback this season seemed to justify things and it was generally agreed it was still better than shopping, although the margins are narrowing with each poor result.
Besides, Tyrer’s brand spanking new coach with its USB phone-charging ports meant no-one was more than a fingertip away from a belated Black Friday deal anyway.
As we ambled our way down the roadworks-strewn motorway, debates over our chances and Phil Parkinson’s future raged on as heated and divided as the current Brexit debates.
There was some optimism we could get something against fellow strugglers Millwall, but there was uncertainty about how we might end the current goal drought.
As usual the single coach was bussed around to the rear of the stadium, parking as close to the visitors’ entrance as possible, without moving a steward.
The stewards inside were most welcoming, albeit a little non-plussed with our requests to turn the heating up, which was the least we thought they could do with pints of Poretti costing £5 a throw.
Phil Parkinson’s customary changes meant recalls for David Wheater and Josh Magennis, fewer changes, as it turned out, than the officials had to make, when we ended up with a third referee and a Millwall fan running the line.
For the first 20 minutes it was like watching Brazil as we tore into Millwall with Will Buckley unplayable.
We went one up through Mark Beevers netting and could easily have been three up.
Millwall gradually pegged us back and their pressure eventually paid of in the dying minutes as they equalised.
Jason Lowe was denied a goal by another superb save at the beginning of the second half but other than that we could not break well enough to wrap the game up.
An away point is always welcome, but it would be more acceptable if we were winning our home matches.
The long tortuous journey home was broken up by a nice bit of football camaraderie at Norton Canes service station where some Bolton fans led a rousing chorus with Manchester City fans of “Jose Mourinho, we want you to stay”.
