Phil Parkinson side-stepped questions over his future at Bolton Wanderers – insisting a 6-0 thrashing at Hull City was an isolated incident.

After suffering the heaviest defeat of his tenure, which left Bolton back in the bottom three of the Championship, Parkinson was asked if he would consider his position.

But though the Bolton boss felt the second-half collapse at the KCOM Stadium was out of character – he admitted culpability for a half-time substitution which changed the balance of the match completely.

“Obviously it’s not a great result when you get turned over like we did today,” he said after the final whistle “It’s probably the first time where we’ve had a real game like that, where we have been out-played, certainly in the second half. We have been in every game this season.

“I opened the team up in the second period to try and give us a little bit more quality going forward and we couldn’t cope with their attacking threat. I have to take responsibility for that.

“The reason we’re always in games is that we keep things tight and don’t give things away.

“Today I felt we needed a bit of freshness at half time. Marc Wilson had a bit of tightness in his thigh as well.

“We got punished by a very clinical team who have got players who are full of confidence at the moment.

“At three or four down we did some strange things out on the pitch where we needed to consolidate, and we didn’t.

“We got punished by being too open in that second period and a very good team has shown how clinical they can be.”

Parkinson admitted his players looked jaded on Humberside, leaving him to regret not making more changes to freshen up his starting line-up.

“Two good performances over the Christmas period, and you look at it and try to keep some continuity,” he said. “We’ll look at whether we should have made changes – and, yeah, it looks like we should because we lacked energy in the performance.

“I have got to look at myself. It’s always in hindsight but sometimes I have made changes when I should have stuck. It’s never an easy call to make.

“Both teams had the same schedule but they got a huge lift with the goals and we just couldn’t contain them in the end.

“In Grosicki and Bowen they have got two of the top wide players in the whole division.”

Is it true that of the 92 league teams, no team scored less than BWFC in 2018?
