Bolton skipper David Wheater set to sign for Salford City

Wanderers may have missed out on a chance to keep David Wheater despite him making a U-turn on a move to Scotland to discuss a move to Salford City.

The centre-back, now a free agent, will speak with the newly-promoted League Two club today as he prepares to move away from the University of Bolton Stadium for the first time in eight-and-a-half years.

Wheater was reluctant to uproot his Bolton-based family and move to East Ayrshire, where Europa League football was on offer, but was on his way to discuss a contract in the SPL yesterday before a bid came in from Graham Alexander’s ambitious side.

It is understood Wanderers have not been able to give the 32-year-old any assurances on a contract for next season with the takeover still uncompleted.

The future of Harry Brockbank, however, may still be with Bolton.

The homegrown defender has been spotted at Wanderers’ training ground as he waits for news on ownership and player salaries.

Brockbank was told in May that while the club was in administration an extended deal could not currently be sanctioned – although his reappearance at Lostock has been widely viewed as a positive sign.

The Bolton News also understands that half a dozen Premier League and Championship clubs have also been in touch with the club to offer players the moment the ink is dry on Football Ventures’ takeover.

Although Phil Parkinson has only been able to call on half a dozen senior players since returning for pre-season a fortnight ago, work has been going on behind the scenes which should be able to boost numbers at short notice.

Regardless of how the situation runs this week it is likely a team of second and third-year scholars will travel to York City on Sunday, with only a handful of professional players.

How the mighty have fallen. Surely he can do better than that!!

Bet they'll pay him big wages if he does go. They got a striker from the SPL last year (Aberdeen?) as they could afford to pay him more than he would get in the top flight in Scotland.

Money is ruining the game at all levels it seems (unless of course you have a rich owner which must be amazing but we aren't that lucky)

The guy was Adam Rooney and he's still with them. Apparently rumour at the time said it was £4000 a week but I find that hard to believe. where would they get that sort of money from

The class of 92 own 50% and Peter Lim owns the other 50%. He is very wealthy and owns clubs in other countries i think?

I don't get this one at all unless he knows somat we don't.

We are a few days away from new owners and therefore he will get his owed pay. Then probably be club captain for the rebuild and he did well in League One before.

He won't be missed. We need some pace at the back, our back four last season must have been the slowest in our history.

I hope he stays, still a good defender especially at League 1 level.

Isn't he out of contract? So he's not our player.

I think he would rather stay with us so is hanging on for the sale to go through, he won't wait forever though.
