At just 17 years of age to keep a clean sheet on debut in front of your home fans and have them chanting “England’s number one” in your direction is Roy of the Rovers stuff. Shaded my man of the match vote by virtue of some belligerent goalkeeping in the second half. Some effort.
HARRY BROCKBANK… 8
Exuded calm in what was a seat-of-the-pants 90 minutes. The boy from Harwood had more senior appearances than anyone else in a Bolton shirt at kick-off, and you can only imagine there are many, many more to come. Captain was fantastic.
LIAM EDWARDS… 8.5
Battered at Wycombe but came back for more. Edwards looked confident, brought the ball out from the back when necessary, and made some brave challenges in tight spots. Aerially, he was first class, and his partnership with Zouma is one of the unexpected highlights of the season thus far. Solid as a rock.
YOAN ZOUMA… 8.5
Quick as a flash, the young centre-back was able to bail his side out of some difficult spots thanks to his powers of recovery. Physically, he is coping superbly with the step up in level, and his contributions have already made him a favourite with the fans.
JOE WHITE… 8
Plunged into a debut in unexpected circumstances last week, White showed his tenacity again to put in a display on the left side of defence mature way beyond his years. At just 17, he seemingly has very bright future ahead of him.
DENNIS POLITIC… 8
We knew he had the swagger, as evidenced by the fact he has now tried to lob the keeper from 40-plus yards in successive matches, but here Politic showed he had the work ethic too. Worked so hard out of possession to disrupt Coventry’s work through midfield.
SONNY GRAHAM… 8
Relatively unknown to the majority of Bolton fans before kick-off – Under-18s graduate Graham put himself about against a pretty experienced Coventry midfield to ensure they all know his name now.
JAMES WEIR… 8
The ‘old man’ of the squad at 24, he played a controlled and important role in the middle of the park and helped the younger players around him. Quite a baptism of fire to his Bolton career but there are signs the ex-Manchester United man will fit in nicely.
CALLUM KING-HARMES… 8.5
So nearly grabbed a goal in the first half which would have been just reward for his efforts. No surprise he succumbed to a bit of cramp before the end – his non-stop work-rate was hugely appreciated by the supporters.
RONAN DARCY… 8.5
We’re starting to see what all the fuss is about with Darcy. Might not have a towering presence but in terms of guile and endurance, he is showing he deserves the buzz created at the academy and on the training ground this summer. Going places.
EDDIE BROWN… 8
After 180 minutes of chasing, the young striker deserves a huge pat on the back. Came so close to getting on the end of a late cross-shot from Hurford-Lockett. Brown is another talent who, given the right guidance, could make his mark at Bolton.
Subs: Hurford-Lockett 7, 67 (for King-Harmes) – Picked up where his team-mate left off, and fired a dangerous cross-shot in late on which could have created a winner.
Not used: Hutchinson, Boon, Senior, Brown-Sterling, Richards, Riley.
Team effort – 10. A performance which put the pride back into a Bolton shirt. No player walked off the pitch without a standing ovation, and deservedly so. The youngest-ever Wanderers team produced when the club needed them most and delivered the most unexpectedly heart-warming result.
