Bradford City boss Gary Bowyer believes the post-match exchange between Jermaine Anderson and Wanderers’ defender Adam Senior on Tuesday night was nothing to worry about.
Tempers flared after Senior had missed a penalty in the shootout when the Bantams midfielder appeared to aim a comment in the youngster’s direction.
Players from both sides came together, although Bolton keeper Matt Alexander diffused the situation by quickly leading Senior away.
Nevertheless, clips of the exchange did the rounds on social media and provoked a furious reaction from Wanderers’ fans.
Bowyer played down the severity of the issue.
“I just think Jermaine might have said something about the way the lad approached the penalty and nothing more than that,” he said.
“It was a great occasion for the whole of Bolton Wanderers, like I said, and there was nothing in it.”
Senior’s performance was praised by Jimmy Phillips, who believes the young defender has progressed well in the first 12 months of his scholarship.
“He has been training like that since the start of pre-season,” he said. “If there is a block to be made you can guarantee it’s Adam Senior who does it.
“He has improved no end and I thought he had a terrific game.”
Phillips believes Wanderers’ youngsters can continue improving their game in the development squad under the tutelage of himself and Under-23s boss David Lee, provided they show the same attitude.
“Any coach will tell you that effort is the minimum they demand from any player,” he said. “It’s up to us as coaches to put the polish in their game and correct the positional stuff, encourage them and get them better technically.”
