It has been a frantic start to his dream job, which saw Keith Hill complete nine signings on deadline day.
And with no time to bed in any of the new players, and last weekend’s scheduled match against Bury not taking place, Wanderers head for Rotherham as League One’s ‘mystery’ team.
Hill has had less than a fortnight to prepare his swiftly-assembled squad for his first match, but he feels that could, in the early stages of his tenure, work in their favour.
And criticism coming their way from teams who will have to face a ‘senior’ side, rather than the youngsters who filled in so admirably, is water off a duck’s back for the experienced boss.
“We can play on the fact we’re an unknown quantity,” Hill said.
“Warny [Millers boss Paul Warne] won’t do it because he’s a sensible manager but what we’ll get is this ‘unfair’ tag – teams saying ‘we should have been playing Bolton three weeks ago when they were playing their under-18s and 21s’.
“There is that unknown quantity to us. The opposition know the players we’ve got at the football club, which is still relatively shallow in numbers, so there won’t be too many surprises.
“They won’t have seen us play, obviously, but we’re just trying to focus on us and whatever anyone says about us we’ll park it, push it to one side and remain focused on our own task, which is winning as many games as we can out of the 39 that we’ve got.
“Potentially we’ll have to bring in some free agents but we’re mindful that we’ve only got two more because of the regulations with the EFL and the embargo, so it’s a question of us having a little look at the players that we’ve got – and we will not ignore the young players because they’ve done ever so well and they will improve and evolve but if bringing more players in is a necessity then we’ll have to.”
