Wanderers are hoping to lure out-of-contract winger Ben Marshall for a trial this week.

Keith Hill wants to bring the 28-year-old former Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder to Lostock for a few days to see whether a deal can be done.

League Two Salford City are also keen on Marshall, who spent the majority of last season on loan at Millwall before being released at Norwich in the summer.

Wanderers have been looking to boost their attacking options and Hill believes a closer look could prove beneficial for both sides.

“We’re trying to encourage him to come into training with us,” he told The Bolton News. “I have spoken to his representatives and we’d like the opportunity to have a look at him, and he can have a look at us.

“He is currently without a club and he’s a very good player.

“With due respect we think he could benefit from taking a look at our club as much as we want to take a look at him.”

Ex-England Under-21 international Marshall can play on either wing and has more than 350 league and cup appearances to his name.

He has played in League One before for Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United but after a series of lucrative moves there is some question over whether Wanderers could lure him into the third tier again.

Hill is due to take his side to Rochdale in the Leasing.com Trophy tonight, although a pitch inspection is scheduled at lunchtime to see whether overnight rain has left the surface unplayable.

Daryl Murphy will not feature, having played the full 90 minutes at Portsmouth on Saturday.

Tonight is also likely to be too soon for Chris O’Grady to make his comeback after a knee injury, although there is some hope he could be involved against Blackpool on Monday.

On the one hand Marshall is a decent player and probably the sort of quality we should be looking at getting in, but on the other it underlines the key issue we face as regards finances. Question is does he want to prove himself enough to accept League 1 wages - and face almost certain relegation?
We aren't the most attractive proposition yet we need players who want to play for BWFC - however I guess we could settle for players who merely want a shop window for themselves with a view to moving on as they would at least be putting everything into it.

Would be great if we could get him, surely even in our state we are a more enticing prospect than Salford? They will probably offer good wages but other than that i can't see why he would drop to league 2.
