Wanderers have handed a trial to ex-Derby County midfielder Timi Elsnik.

The Slovenian 21-year-old played in the 4-1 defeat against Crewe at the University of Bolton Stadium last night – a game which also saw a return from injury for Connor Hall and Josh Earl.

Elsnik made three first team appearances at Derby, all in the EFL Trophy, and was voted the club’s scholar of the year in 2015/16.

He spent time at Swindon Town and Mansfield Town on loan, playing under current Wanderers assistant boss David Flitcroft, before another spell at Northampton Town last season.

Elsnik has played for Slovenia at every youth level and is currently available on a free transfer.

Wanderers have run the rule over a few trialists in recent weeks, including ex-Middlesbrough winger Amadou Sylla.

The 22-year-old Frenchman spent two seasons at the Riverside before his release in the summer and has also trained with Dutch club, Maastricht.

Able to play on either wing, Sylla has represented his country at Under-19s level and also played senior football with Reims.

Sylla played for Wanderers alongside two other trialists in a 6-3 defeat at Ipswich Town last week but stayed under the radar because no details of the Bolton line-up were released by either club.

Also on the team-sheet for Bolton was former Stoke left-back Moussa Niakate.

The defender, also 22, played for the Potters’ development squad last season after signing from Paris FC.

Portuguese midfielder Gilson De Costa was another trialist who featured for the Whites.
