Wanderers plan to speak with Stoke City about keeping Thibaud Verlinden beyond January on loan.
The Belgian winger has been a big hit at the UniBol since scoring on his Bolton debut at the end of August but is currently due to return to his parent club after the New Year’s Day game with Burton Albion.
Keith Hill, whose side take on AFC Wimbledon tomorrow, believes he will know more about Verlinden’s future very soon.
“We have spoken to Thibaud and if Stoke want him to stay then we’re more than happy to take up that opportunity,” he said.
“At this moment in time I’d imagine they want to have a look at him at close quarters – but that conversation will be had with Stoke over the next week or so.”
Asked whether Verlinden could return to Stoke in January and then sign a second loan spell at the end of the month, Hill added: “Potentially, yes, and I’ve had that before where a new manager came into a club and put a player out on loan, taken him back to take a look at him, then sent him out again later in the window.”
Meanwhile, Wanderers host Wimbledon tomorrow with Josh Earl suspended and Hill warning that his squad will be missing more key players though injury.
The identity of the missing parties are once again being kept a closely-guarded secret at Lostock – but Hill admits his squad is being stretched to the very limits.
“We have picked up casualties from the previous game that haven’t recovered,” he said. “They were ones we were carrying in the Accrington game but didn’t realise – and since having scans we know we’ll be missing players from that game.
“There’s no getting around it, we’re getting to the point where players are breaking down.
“We didn’t have any moans and groans but we did have players playing under stress. We maybe didn’t realise the extent of that stress, but now we do.”
