No more points deduction

An arbitration panel has upheld the original decision in respect of the sanctions handed to Bolton Wanderers following their guilty plea in November 2019 to charges of breaching EFL Regulations for failing to meet fixture obligations.

The panel considered the original verdict of a sanction of five points, suspended for 18 months, and a financial penalty in light of the submitted appeal by the EFL, and concluded that the decision taken was proportionate given the mitigating circumstances the Club has faced over the extended timeframe.

While disappointed with the verdict, the EFL respects the decision taken.

Discussions will now continue with EFL Clubs to formalise a scale of sporting sanctions for breaches of relevant EFL Regulations, relating to non-payment of debts and non-fulfilment of fixtures, in future.

The EFL are wankers and not fit to run the game, still wanting to punish us more the bastards.

Some good news for a change. As I have said the EFL are part of the problem not part of the solution.

Next thing Sharon needs to do is make sure the financials are in order then get the embargo lifted early. We are still screwed until that happens IMO.

Doesn't matter how financially blessed we may or not be, it's an automatic 2 year embargo for going into administration.

Chelsea had their embargo lifted early although it wasn't for administration I'll grant you - but should new owners etc still be punished for two more years.

No they should not I agree, but rules are rules, can you imagine the meltdown if the EFL lift the embargo?

At last a bit of good news.
Just imagine the meltdown if the EFL had overturned the original decision made by the independent panel they themselves appointed.
("Look - we're not biased - we've appointed an independent panel, so what could be fairer than that?"
"Erm.. hang on...")

Great news! Even better that the EFL are dissapointed with the outcome. And now they will make rules to cover this scenario in the future rather than having an unknown punishment hanging over whoever it may effect.

The EFL will punish us through refereeing decisions, it's working so far.

Club Statement: EFL Arbitration Panel

In response to the Arbitration Panel upholding the Disciplinary Commission’s original decision in respect of the sanctions handed to Bolton Wanderers Football Club, Chairman Sharon Brittan has issued the following response.

Sharon said: “We are pleased that this decision brings to an end the uncertainty regarding the original conclusion of the Disciplinary Commission. The case was one of the major legacy issues we inherited at the Club and we welcome the opportunity to be able to move forward.

“Our attention can now be completely focused on the pitch as we strive to retain our status in Sky Bet League One.

“We are under no illusions that this will be a difficult task. That’s why it is so important to us that the fans, who have been phenomenal so far this season, continue to get behind Keith and the team for the remainder of the campaign.

“Despite the restrictions imposed on the Club, the management are working around the clock to strengthen the squad to fight for every point available.”

Doncaster Rovers hint at further challenge to Bolton points verdict

Doncaster Rovers say they will review the findings of an arbitration panel which opted against imposing further points penalties on Bolton Wanderers for failing to fulfil fixtures.

In November the South Yorkshire club called for stronger punishment after Bolton were initially handed a five-point penalty, suspended for 18 months, for postponing games against Brentford, in April, and Rovers, in August.

The EFL launched an appeal after pressure from several League One clubs but reported this morning that their efforts have failed, with a second independent panel upholding the original decision.

Wanderers conceded the Brentford game after players went on strike over unpaid wages, the result awarded to the Bees 1-0 after the EFL tried unsuccessfully to reschedule the game.

After going into administration in May, several legal issues delayed their takeover. The club was told by the EFL to start the season at Wycombe with just a handful of professional players, and when safeguarding concerns were raised ahead of the Doncaster game over academy players, they took the controversial decision to postpone the game.

The fixture will be rescheduled, although attempts thus far have failed – the most recent being January 4.

A statement from Doncaster released this morning said the club would look at the details of the case before deciding whether any further action would be taken.

It read: “Doncaster Rovers note the outcome of EFL’s appeal following the independent panel’s disciplinary hearing into Bolton’s cancellation of their fixture against us and failure to fulfil a previous game against Brentford.

“Bolton pleaded guilty to the charges, with the independent panel deciding that our fixture should be rearranged along with a fine and suspended points deduction.

“We backed the EFL’s appeal, believing the decision has the ability to undermine the integrity of the competition, and will now review the panel’s findings.

“Everyone at Rovers is glad Bolton survived their financial problems, we wish them well under their new ownership and will work to schedule the fixture which had been cancelled by Bolton back in August.”
