Joe Dodoo can work his way towards goals, says David Flitcroft

Joe Dodoo will get back among the goals if his work ethic stays high.

That’s the view of assistant boss David Flitcroft, who believes the former Rangers and Leicester City man can be a viable alternative to the injured Daryl Murphy this weekend when Wanderers welcome Peterborough United.

Dodoo has played much of his football as a wide attacker since signing for Bolton at the end of August and has four goals to his name in 27 appearances.

He has not hit the back of the net in his last six appearances, however, and missed a gilt-edged opportunity at Burton in midweek to put the game out of reach at 2-1.

Flitcroft was impressed with Dodoo’s work-rate on the night and believes his former Bury charge will get the rewards if he continues to put in the hard yards.

“It was always going be a difficult shift for Joe, especially when they shifted to 4-3-3 and put Lucas Akins down the centre of the pitch,” he said. “It’s a thankless task but it’s an honest one and that is what he showed, certainly second half, that effort you have to keep putting in. And from that endeavour he got a couple of chances out of it.

“Luckily the top football pundits are picking up on that sort of thing – all they were talking about on Monday Night Football was how hard the top, top players in the world work and how they are prepared to run for the team.

“We reinforce that message so when Jamie Carragher and Sven-Goran Eriksson say the same thing it is good to see that people understand that honesty is the focus to all success.”
