Sam Allardyce’s Bolton Wanderers finished sixth in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Cup for the very first time in their history.bwfc.co.uk takes a look through the archives to look back on a memorable season at the then Reebok Stadium.

March

With only three games played in this month, Wanderers made massive strides as they marched towards UEFA Cup qualification for the first time in their history, but crashed out of the FA Cup to eventual winners Arsenal.

A one-nil victory against Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium, as it was then known, came courtesy of a first-half injury time goal by El Hadji Diouf.

Both sides had several opportunities to add to the scoreline, but Wanderers hung on to claim a memorable victory against City which pushed them up to sixth.

Wanderers’ progress in the FA Cup ended at the Reebok Stadium. Freddie Ljungberg’s third minute goal proved to be the only goal of the game. There was no shame in defeat, as the Gunners went on to win the competition, beating Manchester United on penalties.

Wanderers ended the month in style with Stelios netting the only goal of the game to see off Norwich City at the Reebok Stadium.
