Wanderers have refused to be drawn on the debate over ending the League One season early.
Chief executive Emma Beaugeard says the club intend to wait for clear directives from the EFL, who at present have aligned themselves with the Premier League’s view that fixtures can be completed in June and July.
UEFA confirmed yesterday that if leagues had to finish their season early, European places for the 2020/21 campaign must be determined on “sporting merit” – which is widely understood to mean points per game.
Financial pressure is building on Wanderers – who remain locked in talks with the PFA and their first team squad over the deferment of wages – and is likely to intensify should the EFL continue along the road of playing the remaining 10 games behind closed doors.
“We are currently in negotiations with our players and it is an ongoing discussion,” Beaugeard said yesterday. “Talks have been ongoing about near-future player wage caps and that is something we would support.
“Finishing the season, or not, is not our call at the present and we would comply with whatever ruling is given.”
If the League One table was decided on points per game, Wanderers would finish bottom of the pile, just over two points behind Southend United.
The Whites have taken an average 0.764 points per game – which is higher than Southend – but their 12-point deduction for going into administration would ensure they ended up with the wooden spoon.
Statistically, it would be the third-lowest season in terms of points-per-game. Relegations in 2015/16 (0.652) and 2018/19 (0.695) and 1902/03 (0.794) stand as the least-successful years, if all campaigns are converted to three points for a win.
The big losers would be Peterborough United, who would drop out of their current position in the top six, replaced by Wycombe Wanderers.
The automatic promotion placed, occupied by Coventry and Rotherham, and relegation places taken by Tranmere, Southend and Bolton, would remain unchanged.
