Andy Tutte’s Morecambe misery could serve as motivation to make a success of himself at Bolton Wanderers, says Ian Evatt.

The Liverpudlian midfielder was bombed out by Shrimps boss Derek Adams at the start of the year and has not played a competitive game since November last year.

But his attitude in pre-season – which attracted interest from League One as well as from Wanderers – suggests to Evatt that Tutte still has plenty to offer.

“Every player can have tough times – no matter what level you play at,” he said.

“Andrew has the experience and got a very good education at City. He has played for some good clubs.

“Most importantly, he’s used to winning games at this level.

“We need our senior players to come in and help the younger ones – the majority of our squad are younger – and he will.

“We had him in early in the season and he did really well. We spoke to him and the negotiations have been ongoing.

“The fact he came back and chose us over a League One club is fantastic for us and it says he’s buying into what we are doing and that he wants to be here for the right reasons.”

Evatt reported no fresh injuries going into today’s game against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup but will be looking for some improvement on last weekend’s performance against Crewe.

Back-to-back friendly defeats at the end of the gruelling eight-week training schedule have, in the head coach’s own words, been a “reality check”.

But he has been able to put the results into context and feels his players will show no lasting effects.

“The Wigan game was frustrating because we gave a lot of young players game time that they needed and people will obviously look at it and say it was Wigan at full strength,” he explained.

“But pre-season is about getting everyone up to speed and we weren’t wiling to sacrifice that just to win a pre-season game, so we went with the younger players.

“I have watched Friday back three or four times now and we were excellent first half. We could have been in front by two or three.

“We weren’t clinical in the final third and we lost the game in both boxes – a goal kick and a set piece.

"Crewe were definitely not three goals better than us.

“We are looking forward to that second game against them on Tuesday (in the EFL Trophy) to right a few wrongs.”
