Ryan Delaney is confident things will fall into place soon for Wanderers.
After two successive defeats, Ian Evatt will bring his squad back to Lostock this morning to start planning for the League Two curtain raiser against Forest Green Rovers.
Errors in both penalty boxes have dented the momentum which had been built by the Whites head coach since his arrival from Barrow in the summer. But Delaney senses that may be about to change.
“Every individual in the team, and as a collective, has high standards,” explained the Irish defender. “We’re disappointed with how the last couple of games have gone and you have to learn from those mistakes.
“The gaffer has got in good people, obviously they are talented players, but everyone gets on off the pitch.
“What you want is that to come into what you are doing on the pitch in games, that team morale, and I think it has shown in spells.
“There has been a big influx of players and it does take a little bit of time to get it right. From how hard we’ve been working, though, I think when it clicks – and it will click very soon – we’ll really face up to any team in this league.”
Evatt had called his defenders together at the start of the week to issue a ‘basics first’ reminder, and though there were personnel changes to the back line in the EFL Trophy, the improvement was not as immediate as he would have hoped.
Delaney insists the message has sunk in.
“As a team we know we have been conceding soft goals, and it’s maybe better to get it out of our system now than to get rocked by a few goals when it comes to the league campaign,” he said.
“I think we’ve got to switch on more as a team. We’ll rectify those mistakes and put it right on Saturday.
Delaney started his first game of the season against Crewe, scoring Wanderers’ first goal, and admits the job of being a defender in Evatt’s side is noticeably different than it was under Keith Hill in League One last season.
“I am enjoying it,” the former Rochdale man said. “Obviously, it’s a different style from what most players are used to. But it’s a good learning curve, I think. We’re learning fast.
“It’ll stand us in good stead. The gaffer has said if we can start doing both sides of the game that we’ll have that better percentage chance of playing higher up the leagues.
“The main thing for us as defenders is to defend first. We have to start putting our bodies on the line more to keep the ball out of the net.
“Some of the goals we’ve conceded over the last couple of games, we’ve got to rectify those mistakes immediately.
“We will stick with each other because it’s a great set of lads and I think that will show as we go on through the season.”
