Alex Baptiste rolled back the years to lead Wanderers to a 3-0 win against Southend United – but couldn’t beat the cameras.

The 34-year-old defender got some unflattering snaps on the way into the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday afternoon, clutching boxes of well-known rehydration remedy Dioralyte.

Supporters joked on social he had over-celebrated the previous win at Scunthorpe – but Baptiste answered back in perfect fashion with a brilliant display on the right side of the back three, creating two goals for Nathan Delfouneso and Eoin Doyle.

Asked if his player was feeling worse for wear on the way into the stadium, Ian Evatt cleared up the confusion.

“I think the cameraman’s not doing him any favours to be honest,” he smiled. “I was laughing at a couple of the fans’ comments, I think one comment was he looks like he’s been on a bender since Scunthorpe and if he has, can he tell me where the pub was open because I’m desperate to get in the pub for a pint!

“It’s just part of his ritual, he likes Dioralyte and it’s renowned for being good to avoid cramp so at his age now he does all he can to make sure he can avoid that.”

Baptiste, in his second spell with Bolton, has had to win over some of the doubters who questioned Evatt’s judgement in bringing him to the club in the summer.

Like the team, however, he has found his feet in recent weeks and the Whites boss is delighted to see his former Blackpool team-mate getting some recognition.

“He deserves praise and credit,” Evatt said. “As I said, every single one of us has took stick at some point so far this season and like I said in the week, it gives you a point to prove and it fuels your fire and I think it’s done that with Alex as it has with a number of them and they’re now starting to prove people wrong.”
