Looking Back: Readers given first glimpse of Bolton's 'urban motorway' 12229895

This aerial photograph taken in November 1971 gave readers of the Bolton Evening News the chance to see the full extent of the town’s first ‘urban motorway’.

The inner relief road - which coast £3.5 million - was due to open in December that year. Starting at Kay Street in the top right of the picture, the road crossed Folds Road and swept along the valley of the culverted River Croal beside the Parish Church.

The church, which had undergone a facelift in 1969, almost gleams white.

The relief road runs under the railway bridge before heading off to a new interchange at Bradford Street
