Ian Evatt says Wanderers cannot sit back and admire a four-game winning streak if they want to succeed in League Two.
A 2-0 victory against Scunthorpe United has pushed the Whites to the fringe of the play-off places in ninth, equalling their highest position of the campaign so far.
But Evatt is demanding focus in an effort to climb higher and has identified areas in Tuesday night’s performance he feels will need to improve to get a fifth win on the spin against his former club Barrow on Saturday.
Wanderers fans are whispering excitedly about the prospect of a promotion challenge after a season which had fallen way below expectation.
But Evatt is confident his players will not allow themselves to become distracted.
“Until we are number one in this league I am going to keep pushing the players,” he said. “We are not happy with where we are but we have given ourselves an opportunity – and it’s still only an opportunity. Sixteen games is a hell of a lot of points to play for.
“Let’s not smell ourselves, just get our head down and focus on Saturday.”
Wanderers racked up a fourth clean sheet in six games against The Iron and though Alex Baptiste grabbed the headlines with a fine goal-line clearance at 1-0, Evatt pinpointed a quite unexpected defensive star of the day.
“Clean sheets are the platform for everything,” he said. “If we can keep clean sheets with the attacking players we have got – starting and on the bench – then we are likely to score goals.
“The back four and keeper have been excellent but I think it was a group effort there. The counter-press was excellent.
“Lloyd Isgrove was excellent, it was an unselfish team performance doing the ugly side of the game, that hard work.
“I am really pleased for them all at the moment, not just those in the team but those out of it as well – Ryan Delaney, Brandon Comley, Lukas Jensen, Ben Jackson, Andy Tutte, they are all encouraging each other and pushing each other to get the rewards that we want, a big finish to the season.”
Evatt also explained his decision to take Kieran Lee out of the side after his two starts at Mansfield and Southend.
“Cotton-wool, really,” he said. “We have that luxury. George Thomason has been playing really well and MJ Williams was outstanding again.”
