Bolton boss Ian Evatt wants to see his side be more clinical

Ian Evatt believes showing even more ruthlessness in front of goal is the next stage for his in-form Wanderers.

The Whites have flown up the League Two table in recent weeks with Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over Cambridge meaning they are seventh and just four points shy of the top three.

Evatt hailed the U’s display as his side’s best during his time in charge but had one gripe – that the game was not out of sight sooner, with Kyle Knoyle’s late goal after Matt Gilks’ error giving the visitors hope where there should have been none.

It is making the most of their chances that is therefore next on the Bolton boss’ agenda.

“I think it’s coming, I genuinely do think it’s coming,” he said. “I thought the quality of our final third play was excellent.

“It was just our final finish really, that was the only thing that was lacking. But the way we’re getting there and the way we’re creating chances is really good stuff.

“It’s a quality and a standard of football you don’t see at this level very often and I’m proud of the players for doing that.”

Two key men got the goals with top scorer Eoin Doyle making it 14 for the season and skipper Antoni Sarcevic improving his tally to seven.

“But for an awkward bounce of the ball just on half-time I think Eoin would have had two and we’d have been 3-0 up and it would have been game over and a lot more comfortable,” Evatt added.

“It’s good to have your top scorer on the goalscoring charts, of course it is, but more importantly the amount of chances we’re creating.

“The amount we’re doing and the good work we’re doing tee to green and then the good work in the final third, it’s just that final finish that we’ll continue to work on.”

Now attentions turn to Saturday’s trip to Port Vale and making it 11 games unbeaten and Evatt insists no-one is getting carried away with talk of breezing through the rest of the season.

“We have to remember all the good work we did in the game (against Cambridge) and it’s a massive result,” he said.

“Others are dropping points, we’re on a great run, we’ve just got to keep going.

“It’s a statement and they’re second in the division and for 70 to 75 minutes, we were by far the better team, by far superior and should have been comfortable in the game.

“But we’re not getting too carried away. We know we’re in a good position but we’ve still got loads to do. There’s still 12 games left, lots and lots to play for.”
