Ian Evatt reckons bringing in Wanderers’ ‘Silent Assassin’ ranked as one of his best bits of business in January.
Kieran Lee grabbed his first Bolton goal in the 2-1 win against Walsall and has been turning heads in League Two since his arrival on a free transfer at the start of the year.
Released by Sheffield Wednesday despite being a terrace favourite at Hillsborough, the 32-year-old midfielder surprisingly found himself dropping down to the fourth tier to sign an 18-month deal with Bolton.
Evatt believes he picked up one of the best bargains in the window with Lee quietly going about his business at the UniBol to forge a strong midfield partnership with another new signing, MJ Williams, from Blackpool.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Kieran,” said the Wanderers boss. “He’s a silent assassin.
“He’s a really quiet boy for someone so experienced. He’s not a loudmouth, you don’t hear him but he leads by example and there’s different types of leaders. There’s leaders who are vocal and there’s leaders who just lead by example with what they do day in, day out and how they carry themselves as professionals.
“Kieran is an amazing professional. We’re very fortunate to have him and I feel like he’s a lot better player than what League Two throws at you, but that’s the climate we’re in and we’ve took advantage of that and he’s playing out of his skin.”
Wanderers are now rapidly becoming the team to beat in League Two, moving to within a point of the automatic promotion places with their win at the weekend.
Evatt continues to try and keep a lid on the excitement, for now, and wants full focus from his team this week as they prepare for a televised game against third-placed Forest Green on Saturday lunchtime, “We are getting results consistently and people are starting to talk about Bolton Wanderers for the right reasons again, that’s great,” he said. “But we know we’re nowhere near our end goal. We’ve given ourselves an opportunity of course and we will keep working towards that end goal. That end goal hasn’t changed, regardless of it we were 19th two months ago or fourth or fifth now, but we just need to concentrate and focus on the next game in front of us and we’ve got some big, big games coming up. They’re big for us but they’re also big for the opposition and we’ve just got to keep focused, keep our head down, keep our work ethic day to day right and if we do that, we have a great chance.”
