Eoin Doyle believes a brave approach in the transfer market at the start of the year has been the chief reason Wanderers have turned around their campaign.
Ian Evatt’s side are within striking distance of the top three after their weekend win at Forest Green and will climb into the automatic places if they can beat Colchester United on Good Friday.
Back in January a promotion tilt looked highly unlikely, and Doyle reckons the players brought in during that month, such as Dapo Afolayan, MJ Wiliams, Declan John and Kieran Lee, have been the chief reason for the marked upturn in form.
“It was all about the window, the personnel who came in to help us,” he said. “They were big players and they have been massive for us.
“We have been working on playing this way all season and when those lads came in they adapted right away to what we needed.
“Credit has to go upstairs for backing the gaffer when he needed it and the change in ownership has done the club massively well. They have done a great job.
“Six weeks ago, or the end of January we were 19th and you would have snapped someone’s hand off to be 10th – now we’d be disappointed if we don’t stick around.”
Doyle’s 16 goals have also been a major factor in Wanderers’ revival, with the Dubliner netting five in his last eight games to leave him with the best haul of any Bolton player since Michael Ricketts in 2001.
With nine games remaining, Bolton have suddenly been backed in as second favourites to lift the League Two title with many bookmakers, just behind current leaders Cheltenham Town.
Doyle is reluctant to make predictions and says his focus is fixed entirely on avenging the 2-0 defeat to Colchester from September.
“We definitely want a result because I think we played well down there and didn’t get anything,” Doyle said.
“I am looking forward to it but there are a lot of games coming up now and it will be over in a flash. Please God, we can keep going.”
