Kieran Lee looks set to miss Wanderers’ final day decider against Crawley.
The influential midfielder limped off towards the end of Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Exeter City, with Ian Evatt confirming an injury after the final whistle.
“He hurt his calf,” said the Bolton boss. “It is pulled, so it looks unlikely that he will be fit for next week. But we have young George (Thomason) and Sarce (Antoni Sarcevic) will be fitter again, so we will go again.”
Skipper Sarcevic was also withdrawn in the second half, with Evatt admitting he is yet to reach top condition after missing several games with a hamstring injury.
“He was shattered,” he said. “He has trained for probably four or five days in the last eight weeks, so he was tired.”
Wanderers missed out on a golden opportunity to secure automatic promotion after letting a lead slip against the Grecians.
Gethin Jones’ first-half strike had momentarily put them joint-top of the league but after Randell Williams brought the visitors level, Peter Sweeney snatched a headed winner in injury time to leave Bolton needing to go to Crawley and claim victory on the final weekend to be assured of a top three spot.
On hearing that ‘Bolton always seem to do it the hard way’ a inconsolable Evatt added: “Everyone keeps telling me that and I’m getting tired of hearing it, to be honest.
“I just want my team to do the job and what I think they are capable of and today we haven’t done it, but we’ll go on Saturday and try and get the job done.”
