Wanderers are searching for a front man to give them a “different dimension” as competition for last season’s top goal-getter Eoin Doyle.

After releasing Shaun Miller this summer, Bolton boss Ian Evatt finds himself short of options to challenge Doyle for a place up front.

The Whites have already added three new players to the squad, but Evatt has pledged there are “lots more to come” – and one of his chief priorities will be to find a different type of striker to last season’s top scorer.

“I think we need someone that gives us a different dimension to what Eoin gives us,” Evatt said. “And he gives us a lot, so it is a difficult position to find, especially number nines, there aren’t many around.

“Obviously, we’re looking for someone who is a bit more physical, a bit quicker and who can stretch the back line and give us a plan B if we need it.”

Evatt says releasing former Crewe and Morecambe striker Miller was not a simple decision after he had provided some key goals in the promotion campaign.

But he admits Miller’s similarity in playing style to Doyle counted against him in the end when he weighed up his retained list at the start of May.

“Shaun was probably my hardest decision of the summer,” he said. “That was a really difficult one because he had been fantastic for us and scored some important goals to get us some valuable points.

“He is a great lad as well and he was a big part of the dressing room, but I just feel, moving forwards in a higher division, we need something different to Eoin.

“Shaun and Eoin are quite similar in many ways, similar age, the way they play is quite similar, goal-scorers.”

Meanwhile, Football Ventures are working towards releasing their first set of financial accounts by the end of this month.

Wanderers’ parent company, Football Ventures (Whites Limited) have been given a deadline of June 30 to file their figures for 2019-20.

The documents should provide the first real peek behind the curtain, and a chance assess the financial challenges faced by Bolton’s owners since they took the club out of administration in September 2019.

The football club arm of the company, FVWL Football Limited, is likely to be flagged up on Companies House as having overdue accounts from today (June 10).

The Bolton News understands that the current auditing process will cover all three sections of the club – parent, football and the FVWL Hotel Limited – and produce accounts in one go.

Many businesses have been operating on extended deadlines because of issues during the pandemic, and that has resulted in the three different arms of the group having three separate deadlines set.

As a result, accounts should be available for Wanderers fans to check by the due date of the parent company, June 30.

No financial information has been made available for supporters since April 2018 when the last set of the soon-to-be-defunct Burnden Leisure Ltd accounts were issued. This was followed by a confirmation statement the following October.

Glad Ian’s looking for someone to complement Doyler rather than another similar player like Miller was. Someone a bit more physical would be ideal and hopefully with a bit of pace.
