Those of you that follow my work will know my penthouse has two entrances, the front door where footballers, celebs and hotties are greeted, and the tradesman's entrance where the riff-raff are directed.

Unfortunately the double doors to the tradesman's entrance had become worn through excessive use so I had to get a man in to fix them. I invited a few local carpenters to inspect my tradesman's entrance and give me a quote for new doors. I went with Roger because he claimed to have been inside several tradesman's entrances, and promised me a tradesman's entrance people would be proud to enter.

The quote I accepted was £1200 fitted. Anyway, Roger completed the job last Friday and I was over the moon with the result. My neighbours have been coming through my tradesman's entrance ever since, claiming it's the best one they've ever experienced.

However, on Saturday I received a text from Roger saying he'd had to spend an extra £250 on the tradesman's entrance as it was larger than he had originally thought. I quickly told him to 'fook off' and pointed out he'd measured my tradesman's entrance so I wasn't responsible for his cock-up. He's become quite aggressive in his replies, his last text threatened to "smash my back doors in" if he didn't get his £250.

I have a written quote stating the price is £1200 so I don't think he has a leg to stand on demanding more money, but what do you think? Have you ever had a tradesman demand extra money after doing a job?

If the only consequence of not paying the additional £250 is that he smashes your back doors in it strikes me as a win-win situation for you.

Problem with Nat's backdoors is, they've been smashed in so often, the support needs a lot of work to rectify the problem.

He's trying it on. He's knows you're happy with the job, and is angling for more. You need help from my mate back door Barry. He's got an offer I think. I'll leave you a link if you want to take it up.

Nat, maybe you should record it on camera. You can then show the police you having your back entrance entered without your consent. Don't forget to put a notice on the door telling anyone that they are being recorded, otherwise you can't use it as evidence of your violation. in the meantime I would try not to use your rear entrance excessively.

Too many of you are fixating on the tradesman's entrance bit - this is about being ripped off by a carpenter.

The bottom line Nat is whether his threats could turn violent, otherwise tell him no, its his error. I don.t know how much the job cost, but £250 adrift seems a bit out of order. This practice is quite common in the building trade, and comes under the header of 'extras', usually things you have asked for that he never told you about at the time, but where he put a price on.

Where's the happy ending? I get my back doors smashed in if I don't hand over £250.

Some people (Tory MP's spring to mind) would happily pay £250 to have their back doors smashed in.

Don't pay him and put the money to your next urgent project which is your box. Last time i was in there it was in a shocking state.
