Harry Brockbank does not need to pick a position in the Wanderers set-up, says Ian Evatt.
The versatile defender filled in across the backline in League Two last season – but Evatt rejects the suggestion that he should be specialising at this stage of his career.
Brockbank, 22, broke through from the academy in the Championship as a centre-back but has largely been used as a full-back since the manager’s arrival last summer.
Evatt is pleased that the Bolton-born defender makes himself available, wherever he ends up on the team-sheet.
“I don’t think he necessarily has to pick a position because it pigeonholes him,” he said.
“I think you are better off having four or five chances of getting into the team than just one.
“He is lucky he can play centre-back, right-back, left-back, because it gives him a better chance of playing.
“If I was him I’d be saying ‘put me in the team wherever you want’ and that is the type of attitude he has.”
Wanderers return to the UniBol today for the first competitive game since February 2020 and with dry weather expect the attendance to hit around 15,000.
Evatt was happy with last weekend’s dress rehearsal against Blackburn Rovers, which finished in an entertaining 2-2 draw, and accepts his players have a duty to the fans to be value for money this season.
“I have said all along that this is an entertainment industry and we sometimes forget that,” he said. “People work very hard for their money, especially in the climate we are in at the moment and the pandemic, and they have chosen to spend it watching our football club, which is fantastic.
“They have a right to be entertained and we will be doing our best to do that. But I’d guess most Bolton fans will judge whether they have been entertained or not based on the end result and we will have to try and win the game as best we can.”
