After China did the world a favour by adopting  one child per couple policy that ran for 40 years until 2016, they switched to  a 2 child policy and have now moved to 3 as per this article.

Whilst I appreciate that these policies have massively reduced the birth rate leaving them with a disproportionately aging population, this has to be of considerable concern to environmentalists.

What was the consequence of breaking the rules previously?

A forced termination? Fined? Sent to prison to do hard labour?

Pretty much.
One of the worst things was that in a society that valued sons over daughters, a lot of baby girls were killed.
As a result of this there are now 33 million more males then females in China which has led to many societal and psychological problems, especially for poorer young males who have a much reduced chance of ever getting married.

China definitely took one for the team, but they're not having any more of that.
