'That has to hurt us' - Evatt issues home truths after Cambridge defeat 12948516

Ian Evatt believes the rollocking he dished out to his players at Cambridge United was well deserved.

The Bolton boss made no secret of his displeasure as his side surrendered an early goal and then struggled to make their possession count at the Abbey Stadium.

It might only have been the Whites’ first defeat of the season, and their fourth in some 27 league outings, but the performance left Evatt feeling he had to issue a few reminders at the final whistle.

“They were choice words because our standards are better than that,” he said. “Our standards are higher than that.

“We have not lost many games for a long, long period of time, so that has to hurt us and we have to be better at what we do.

“There were too many under par. The game was lost in the first half and in the first 15 to 20 minutes when they got that goal because it just invited them to make things very, very difficult for us.”

Wanderers mustered just one shot on target despite having more than 74 per cent of the ball.

Evatt felt his side surrendered their best chance of victory by gifting a soft early goal, which allowed Cambridge to sit in and defend.

“It’s really hard when there’s so many bodies in their final third,” he said. ”There is no space, but when it’s 0-0, they will get nervy and panicky and eventually we will pick them off and get one, like we did many times last year and we have done again this season.

“But we lost that opportunity with a real poor goal in the first half.”
