Eoin Doyle won’t hide away after enduring another frustrating afternoon in front of goal at Sunderland.
The Irish striker – last season’s top goal-scorer in League Two – has seen his fortunes stutter in recent weeks.
Doyle has scored four times this term, twice from the penalty spot, but missed crucial chances against Rotherham United and Sunderland as Wanderers fell to successive league defeats for the first time in more than nine months.
Ian Evatt is backing the 33-year-old to shoulder the responsibility once again at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.
“Eoin is having a hard time but I will back him,” he said. “He is a proven goal-scorer and he will take those chances on another day. The main thing is that we are creating them for him.
“And he will back himself. He has been a very good player for this football club, and he will continue to be that. “We will go on to Charlton and try and play exactly the same way.”
Backing for Doyle went straight through the Wanderers camp.
George Johnston reckons his team-mate will not mope about the opportunities that went astray.
“That’s the type of person and player that he is,” he said. “He’s not going to shy away and he’s confident and we are confident about him that he will get goals this season.
“Just today, he had a lot of chances, but he didn’t put one in. We don’t think that’s going to affect the next game.
Doyle needs one more goal for 50 at League One level, which have been scored in 108 games for Bolton, Chesterfield, Oldham and Bradford City.
Johnston reckons his team-mate will be looking to make immediate amends, starting on the training ground on Monday morning.
“Doyler is lively, he’s difficult to mark,” he said. “He’s very sharp and he finishes a lot in training.
“Unfortunately, he didn’t get them today, but he will get them. He’s a good lad as well so he’ll bounce back from this.
“He’s not going to hide and shy away from the next chance. He’s going to try and put things right. It’s one of them days for him. He’s had a great career and scored a lot of goals so I don’t think you can just question him on today because he’ll get there.”
