Ian Evatt admits slow starts are proving costly 12326032

Wanderers boss Ian Evatt says his side have developed a “habit of shooting ourselves in the foot” in recent weeks.

The Whites have gone behind in their last four matches in League One and Evatt admits that chasing games is tough at this level.

But the Bolton boss wants his side to be patient with their possession-based style and insists they will reap the rewards in the latter stage of matches.

“I know sometimes fans get frustrated when we’re recycling the ball around the back and we’re waiting and looking for openings, but you’ve seen the minute you start crossing it from deep, these big teams are built for that,” he said.

“But if you move them side to side, they can’t do it for 90 minutes and the last half an hour (against Gillingham), I thought they were out on their feet.

“That’s no coincidence, it’s because we’ve moved them about the pitch for 60 minutes, but when we get to that phase and that stage of the game, the score has to be 0-0 because then we can take advantage of it.

“At the minute we’ve got a nasty habit of shooting ourselves in the foot. It was the same at Plymouth on Tuesday.

“Before the rain came down and we couldn’t finish strongly, for the first 25 or 30 minutes of the second half, it was all us. The 60 minute mark we had good chances but didn’t take it and the score’s 2-0 to them.

“It was the same again (on Saturday). It has to be 0-0 and if it is that, then we can take advantage when teams fatigue against us.”
