Wanderers worked overtime at the weekend to try and land a new signing ahead of tomorrow night’s League One game against Wycombe.
Although Ian Evatt’s side had no fixture, the cogs continued to turn inside the UniBol as they look to bring in one of three new additions planned for the January window.
Kieran Lee could be available after returning to training but Wanderers have still made signing a midfielder their chief priority and are understood to be close to signing Rochdale’s 21-year-old playmaker Aaron Morley.
The club are staying tight-lipped on suggestion that they have agreed a deal for the Bury-born youngster, who has already made 121 career appearances including a full season at League One level.
Hull City, Barnsley and Portsmouth have recently been linked, and Shrewsbury Town were reported to have had a £150,000 offer turned down in the summer.
But on Saturday, Dale boss Robbie Stockdale admitted that the situation was moving on apace. After excluding Morley and striker Jake Beesley from the squad to face Colchester United – a game postponed just 30 minutes before kick-off – he confirmed that bids had been accepted for both players.
“We were missing a couple of players that the club has accepted bids for, good bids, and I’ll go into more detail next week because I don’t think it is right to do that until it is finalised,” he told Dale’s official website.
“We understand what we are as a football club and the progression of players is really important to us. If these deals get over the line then it will be a fantastic move for the boys, so we will see what the next 48 hours brings on that.”
Wanderers have already paid out £320,000 to sign Dion Charles from Accrington Stanley and Evatt hinted that all three of the signings he has planned for this month could also involve a cash fee.
Meanwhile, Southport have confirmed that defender Liam Edwards has extended his loan spell with the club.
After battling back from a serious knee injury which kept him out of the game for 23 months, Edwards made a brief comeback for the Whites as a substitute in a 3-0 win at Rochdale in the Papa John’s Trophy.
He was then loaned out to Conference North Southport for regular football and has thus far impressed as he pushes back towards full fitness.
