Marlon Fossey has given Wanderers fans hope that he sees a longer-term future at the club after admitting: ‘I just love Bolton!’
The Fulham loanee has been a massive success since arriving at the UniBol and his spectacular celebrations lit up Saturday’s vital 3-2 victory at Oxford United.
Fossey had just nine senior games before signing on loan for Bolton – all of which were played in a loan spell at Shrewsbury – but has proved the surprise hit of the January transfer window.
Ian Evatt has already confirmed that Bolton have spoken to Fulham about taking the US youth international on full-time in the summer, and Fossey is certainly enjoying his stay.
“I thank the gaffer for trusting me because many clubs didn’t before I came here,” he told The Bolton News.
“I am enjoying playing under him and playing in this team, there is a lot of quality here and it is a lot more enjoyable when you play with good players. I am loving it at Bolton on and off the pitch.”
Fossey wants to leave specifics on his future at Bolton to the end of the season and concentrate on maintaining a run which has seen Evatt’s side close the gap on the top six to eight points.
“Like I said before I like to try and keep my focus in the now and it seems to be working for me at the moment,” he said.
“It is always nice when you are appreciated, and the fans have been great, but I think it is important I keep looking at the next game, the short-term, and then my performances will benefit.”
Fossey scored his first professional goal on Saturday, bringing the score back to 2-2 after Declan John’s earlier effort, then created the winner for Amadou Bakayoko with seven minutes left to play.
And he turned heads with his celebration, a triple somersault in front of the 1,750 Wanderers fans who had made the journey to the Kassam Stadium.
“The celebration came from my gymnastic background,” he said. “I competed for Jersey a few times but ended up having to focus on football because I wanted to get to a higher level. Luckily, a lot of what I learned has stayed with me.
“The rustiness of it is because I haven’t scored in four or five years. Hopefully it will get smoother, the more I score.”
Fossey also revealed that he had done extra work in training with the Bolton strikers to try and improve his returns after the recent game against Cambridge.
“My conversion rate has been a bit low of late, so I have been joining in with the attacking players finishing off the training,” he said.
“I am getting in the positions and against Cambridge in particular I had three shots.
“I put it as a target to join in with the attackers and improve that side of the game this week, and it has paid off.”
The win raises the prospect that Evatt’s side could make a late dash for the play-offs spots in League One and victory at Oxford, who had started the weekend in fifth spot, has certainly made the league sit up and take notice.
“We were under no illusion that we needed a win if we are going to get where we want to go at the end of the season,” Fossey added. “It was a battle but our quality shone through, it was a big win.”
