No Unlucky 13 For Dapo Large

Dapo Afolayan is revelling in his role as a goalscorer after helping fire Wanderers to another home win.

Afolayan hit the net just once in his first three-month stay with the Whites last season – on the final day in the promotion-clinching win at Crawley.

He’s barely stopped since becoming a permanent signing, though, with his strike in Wanderers’ 4-0 win over AFC Wimbledon taking him to 13 for the season.

The former West Ham man effectively banked the points as he doubled Wanderers’ lead early in the second half as he again linked up with Dion Charles to unhinge the Dons’ defence.

“I’m enjoying my football and enjoying being able to go out there and express myself,” said Afolayan.

“It’s something we spoke about a lot last year – my goals – and it’s something I want to keep improving on.

“Dion creates loads of opportunities out of his pure work-rate, not just for myself and himself but the team.

“The manager and Pete (Atherton) said to us to look for each other in and around the box and work those one-twos and we did that.

“I think all three of us up there today were good and that’s what the team needed.”

Charles also got on the scoresheet with his sixth goal in eight games after fellow January signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had broken the deadlock before the break with his first Wanderers’ goal.

Amadou Bakayoko came off the bench to add a late fourth with a fifth successive home win the perfect response to the mid-week defeat at Burton which had ended Wanderers’ seven-match unbeaten run.

“It was a very good win and good first performance, first and foremost. We needed it after Tuesday night,” added Afolayan.

“We played some good stuff. We’ve just had two tough trips for different reasons.

“Tuesday was a blip and we just wanted to get over that as quickly as we could.

“The fans always give us a lift here. Our home form is top-drawer right now. We want to make this a hard place to come and I think we’re doing that at the moment.”
