Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was overjoyed to beat the clock and double his Wanderers’ goal tally to put the finishing touches to a critical win at Gillingham.
Bodvarsson coolly slotted home the Whites’ final goal in a comprehensive 3-0 victory at the Priestfield Stadium which revived Wanderers’ play-off hopes.
And the Iceland international admitted his relief at hitting the target before he was finally able to celebrate in front of the travelling fans.
“I was looking at the clock and at 85 minutes I was thinking ‘I need to score here’ because we were getting a lot of chances,” said Bodvarsson after his second goal in a Wanderers’ shirt.
“It was an open game and I was fancying myself, so it was good to get the goal.
“Marlon (Fossey) did really for me as well. It was a good team goal and I was really happy to be on the scoresheet.
“Seeing the ball back in the net is always a great feeling.
“There’s nothing better (than scoring in front of the supporters). These fans are brilliant. They have been since I came here on day one.
“I have really felt at home and when you feel good at a certain place, you play good, and that’s how I’ve been feeling since I came here. It’s been brilliant.
“I am really enjoying my football at this club.”
Bodvarsson and his forward colleagues carried a threat all afternoon, although it took a stunning strike from midfield man Aaron Morley to break the deadlock before half-time.
The Gills were reduced to 10 men after an hour and five minutes later it was effectively game over when Declan John followed up another Bodvarsson effort to rile home the second goal.
Wanderers’ sixth away win of the campaign could have been even more emphatic but they still did more than enough to earn a ninth victory in 12 games after the setback of defeat at MK Dons a week earlier.
“It was a much better performance than against MK Dons,” added Bodvarsson, whose impact alongside his fellow January arrivals has been key in a run which has kept Wanderers’ top-six hopes alive.
“It was a good reaction. We played our football and showed our identity.
“I would have wanted more goals to be fair but it was a good win against a tough opponent.
“It’s always great to be on the scoresheet but all in all I’m just really happy with the way we played. As a team everything was clicking and we played good football.
“We just needed to re-group again and play our style – be aggressive with a high press – and I think it worked out really well.
“There are 10 games left and I think we should just go all in. We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain, just play our style of football until the end of the season and see where that takes us.
“Nothing’s finished yet and you never know what can happen. Hopefully we will push into those play-off spots.”
