Very sad news. Hard to see your old heroes going down. RIP Syd.

Sad news indeed. One of the last truly dyed in the wool Wanderers.
Syd and Hoppy used to do hosting duties together at the Reebok when Hoppy was alive.
I remember with huge affection their debuts for the Wanderers. Hoppy was incredibly impressive in a home game against Blackpool. Syd was a promising young stand-in for Tommy Banks who was playing for England in Northern Ireland along with Tom Finney that Saturday. I still have the PNE programme.
RIP Syd.

RIP Syd. I will always remember him for his brilliant slide tackles. Remember fondly one occasion when on a pitch like a boating lake he launched himself into one of his trademark tackles and missed both player and ball and ended up on his arse on the running track around the old Burnden pitch.
