Good luck to the lad, he's very brave to do this especially at 17. He spoke very well on the TV interview i saw.

I hope he doesn't get any abuse but i fear he will, we all know how the terraces can be.

I'm guessing a few more gay players may come out now as there must be quite a few amongst the 92 clubs and non-league.

Well done to the lad. Let's hope he's shown others the way. I'm sure he'll get some abuse, but you get it for having big ears these days.
Some supporters need to get over themselves.

I'm struggling to see how coming out is going to help him TBH.

Statistically there must be more than 100 male gay professional footballers in the UK but they keep it quiet because of the appalling culture in the game and on the terraces and coming out will only attract attention and abuse from the dickheads - which in a profession that is heavily dependent on confidence can only be counterproductive.

Perhaps it will encourage younger gay people to get involved in the game but I'm not sure it will - they are already in the game if they want to be aren't they? They just don't feel the need to discuss it publicly. And in the women's game it's pretty much taken for granted and female players only mention their wives when it's relevant to the discussion.

I think what I'm trying to say is that people don't generally draw attention to themselves by publicly discussing their sexuality because that's a private matter and really shouldn't be an issue.
Haven't heard a single person come out and say that they are into BDSM or have a slipper fetish publicly. Why would they feel the need to?

Individual sexuality and professionalism shouldn't mix - and shouldn't be an issue IMO.

An ex Wanderer of the distant past is gay. He's never come out, so don't ask. Mrs Bonce knew him.

Completely in awe that a 17 year old after 1 professional game has had the courage to do this.

There is a stigma in football, a horrid ugly stigma caused by neanderthals and gammons around being gay, it needs to be rid of.

Yup -it's toxic.

They can be rooted out of the squad by employment legislation, but you can't get it off the terraces without some serious policing and bans unfortunately.

They always moan. And Josh Charnley looks to be off when his contract runs out this year.

We've had a bit of a bad run, but players coming back and a few more home than away fixtures will see us right over the next few weeks.

Croft is unbelievable player

Hi Johnny hope you and your family are well. is your son still playing rugby?

As for the story, well it really shouldn't need to be a story in 2022 should it, people are what they are and good luck to them if they are gay (or whatever the correct term is now these days).

No doubt the Neanderthals that still abound in society will give the lad a hard time and he probably is to young and fearless not to realise this and why he made the announcement and why many before him haven't!

I noticed that the Neanderthals at Everton were being racially abusive too the other day against Brentford - so much for two years of taking the knee then!

You don't change peoples hatred and prejudice by empty gestures, you change them through education and social culture.

Hope the young lad goes on to have a great career and becomes an inspiration and role model for others to follow.

Too right sluffy, same with the job I do, trying to educate about wearing the right ppe starts with the younger lads, as the older ones just see it is a box ticking exercise.

I hope this lad goes onto lift every trophy possible, but even if not, his name will be etched in history and I hope he is proud and does change things going forward.

All good here, as can be thanks Sluffy. Hope all is well with you.

Smile

Out of interest, what is the correct PPE for rugby players these days Johnny?

That's all my lad wears Lusty.  Keep trying to get him in a scrum cap and gum shield but says he can't hear or talk with them and he's a half back so has too 🤔 🤷
