Bolton Wanderers closing in on double defender swoop for Bristol City and Tranmere Rovers duo

Kane Wilson and Josh Dacres-Cogley are set to be the newest additions to Ian Evatt's squad for the 2023-24 season

According to a report from BristolLive, Bolton are closing in on the signing of Kane Wilson from Championship outfit Bristol City for an undisclosed fee.

Wilson failed to feature much at Ashton Gate last season following his move from Forest Green Rovers and is set to undergo a medical with Bolton for a fresh challenge.

And adding to the competition at right wing-back will be Josh Dacres-Cogley, who is set to pen a two-year deal at the UniBol, per a report from Alan Nixon on Patreon.

Bristol Rovers and Port Vale were also said to be keen on the 27-year-old, but he has opted for Wanderers to compete with Wilson for a place in Evatt's starting 11.

Who are Kane Wilson and Josh Dacres-Cogley?
Wilson was one of the most sought-after full-backs in the EFL last summer following his exploits with then-League Two champions Forest Green Rovers after he notched three goals and 14 assists under Rob Edwards in 2021-22.

The 23-year-old was injured for much of his first - and seemingly only - year with Bristol City though after they paid around £100,000 for his services, playing just seven times and when he was fit he was second choice behind George Tanner.

Dacres-Cogley meanwhile is set to make the step up to the third tier of English football with Bolton after playing in League Two for the last two years with Tranmere.

He scored once and added four assists to his tally in 46 league outings last season and he does have experience of playing in the Championship, appearing 23 times in the second tier for Birmingham City before departing the Blues in 2021 - 10 years after joining their academy.

Never heard of either player.

But with one having played only 7 games last season and the other playing for a mid-table League 2 side I can almost feel promotion to the Championship.

I've just read that Cole Stockton has signed for Burton.

Fook off! Fooking Burton!

And to make matters worse I've also read reports that we are signing Dan Nlundulu. That would just be typical of Bolton.

Manager admits we didn't score enough goals last season but goes into the new season with the same useless stumps up top.

Just seen the same on twitter about Nlundulu, not sure about him to be honest, didn't look to have a lot of goals in him from what i saw.

I'm with Nat on Stockton, we should have gone for him.

Haha, I'm ITK! Kane Wilson/Josh Cogley next?

Excited to read that Wilson is being considered "...the signing of the summer in League One..." After the successes of Traff and Bradley on loans, has Evatt & Co. actually improved these positions with players we own?

Interesting group of players we've been linked with. Now we've sorted the goalies out - one of whom probably won't even make the bench under Evatt - we generally seem to be linked witht lower championship quality players with a bit of a history of injuries or unfulfilled potential. Makes sense in our position to have a bit of a (financially constrained) gamble - as long as we we have quality cover in every position.
Wing backs Fankaty Dabo, Josh Cogley and Kane Wilson and midfielders Florian Flick, Ollie Norburn, Ethan Chislett and Keanu Baccus all seem logical signings but I'm wondering how many of them will end up here?
Moreover, who will we sell? The Santos to Leicester rumour hasn't gone away yet so I suspect we're in for a busy window again.

Looks like we’re pretty active but I’ve never heard of any of the players we’ve signed and only one of those we’ve been rumored to be interested in. Trust those responsible to know what they’re doing but I don’t particularly like starting every season with half a new squad to settle in, especially when they need to be starting games. I just hope we can get all our business done early because talk of promotion is very premature IMO.

We don't know how the window will pan out or who will be leaving yet - despite which fans are already judging. Some of our alleged targets look great on paper but we have no idea how they'll perform for us in Evatt's system.
We just have to have faith that the management team know what they're doing.
What we do know is that the targets seem to be either youngsters with potential or older players who have had their careers stymied by injury - which is a decent gamble if you're working to a budget and yet want to get promoted.
Josh Cogley for example. They've crunched the numbers on him and theoretically he could turn out to be more Connor Bradley than Liam Gordon (who they also crunched the numbers on) but we just don't know yet. Equally theoretically, he'd be back up for Kane Wilson if we get him - but again we don't know. Maybe even Sheikh Mohamed Fankaty Dabo will get the RWB spot - the guy who scored the best own goal I've seen (below)
Personally I'm more interested in the midfield. Flick, Baccus and Norburn all seem to have a bit more fight in them than our current lot bar Demps so I'm looking to see how that pans out.
Realistically we won't know how the recruitment is shaping up until the season is well underway so until then it'll be a wankathon of speculation - and I'm definitely up for that.

With the Baccus rumours picking up again  (played well against Argentina last week BTW but lost due to that man Messi) I asked St Mirren fans whether they thought Baccus was worth £400 to £450k...this is what they said:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Quote
£400-£450 won't buy Baccus. Try doubling that amount and throw in add ons. There is a few looking at him so unless you are prepared to push the boat out then he will go elsewhere.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Quote
Whilst I think Keanu is worth more, we have to also be realistic.
He only has a year left and if the board is faced with a choice of £400K now or £0 next Summer then it won’t be a very difficult decision for them to make.
If he goes to England with a decent sell on attached then the hope is that we get the bigger rewards further down the line.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Quote
All things being equal, we should be looking at 7 figures.
Going into last year though, I'd be disappointed if we accepted less than £750k and absolutely raging if he went for under £500k.
Anything less and you're well into 'not worth selling him now' territory and you'd be better off keeping him until January and seeing where we are...if we're out both cups and europe isnt a remote possibility then we'd be as well punting him then for about £200k.
Half a million now would at least give us a fair shake of a decent replacement. A couple hundred grand wouldn't.
What I WOULD like to see is a show of good faith from Baccus in the form of O'Hara that he signs a short extension with the understanding of a bid coming in above a certain amount meaning we wouldn't stand in his way.

Finally, much like Blackpool when they were sniffing about, I don't think Bolton or League 1 is a good move at all for Baccus. He's 25, a regular in the Australia squad now and is definitely at the level where he can play championship level football without any fuss. If he was 19 or 20 I'd be saying it's a logical next step but he's at a stage now that if he's going to move, it needs to be to a higher standard of football again.

I would keep Baccus for the £400k if that was all there was to the deal, £400k and a 25% sell on with bonuses for international caps, and I might be interested.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Quote
I think many of the teams looking at Baccus think there's a profit to be made and will look to sell him on . Add ons will be hugely important in any deal to sell Baccus

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Quote
I like Baccus but hes not got a real unique selling point. Theres plenty slightly worse players who offer the same/more in terms of tangible output you can get for under £1m.
Hibs got millions for Nisbet because hes a proven goalscoring striker. Comparing him to Baccus in terms of what clubs want is mental. Goals win prizes so the cost is greater.
Make of that what you will....

I just can't see us spending that kind of money at the moment.

With their estimates ranging from £400k to £1 million and the variable of sell-on clauses etc, I'm still not clear on what "that kind of money" is amigo.
We spent a fair whack on Victor so it's not like the board aren't prepared to spend a few quid, but with the other positions that need to be filled I imagine there won't be loads thrown at it - unless of course we sell e.g. Santos which would be daft IMO. Or a good chunk of the £4 mill recently raised is diverted to playing staff.

Lots of twitter talk that it's happening and St Mirren fans aren't happy.

Well it's reportedly £275k with add ons - which are likely to be significant - so I don't blame them.
The ones I've spoken to have been brilliant TBH but there is some discontent if the reported fee is accurate:

St Mirren fan: (Ric) wrote:
You can spin this in all sorts of positive ways, from showing that we are an attractive club for players to develop - and get decent media coverage, to the fact this has happened early in the window so it provides us lots of time to try and bring in a replacement.
That may all be true, but a reported figure of £275k, even with significant add-ons, seems surprisingly low. I will be bias, after all, but even an objective view must see that as selling below his value.
We don't know the ins and outs, nor do we know if we had a prior agreement with Baccus or his previous club regarding when he'd move or for how much, but I'll not lie it feels a bit of a slap in the face. Not that I begrudge Baccus the opportunity, I wish him well, as will all the St Mirren fans, as it's certainly been enjoyable watching him play.

The other thing about Twitter is the bollocks written.
Some one said he'd failed his medical. Turned out his train from Edinburgh had been delayed and he hadn't even had the medical.
