Former Gillingham captain Kyle Dempsey has appeared in court charged with attacking a club doorman.
Dempsey, 27, spent 18 months with the Gills before his move to Bolton Wanderers in January last year.
It was alleged that Dempsey - who now lives in Blackpool - and his father Michael Dempsey, 50, assaulted a man in Maryport on July 16, 2022. Both entered not guilty pleas during a brief appearance at the Workington Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The dad also faces a charge of criminal damage.
Both were given unconditional bail and will appear at Carlisle Crown Court on February 6. The town of Maryport is close to Carlisle, where footballer Dempsey started his career.
A statement released by Bolton in July stated: “Kyle Dempsey and his father were enjoying an evening out with their family in their home town of Maryport following Saturday’s pre-season friendly against his former club Carlisle United.
”During the course of the evening, they were both subjected to an unprovoked assault which left them requiring medical treatment.”
The alleged assaults came at the Maryport Labour Club after Bolton had faced Carlisle in the pre-season match.
