Ian Evatt on Burton draw and Santos injury 17159642

Ian Evatt has shared an update on Ricardo Santos after the Wanderers skipper was forced off at half time during the 1-1 draw at Burton.

Mark Helm struck early in the second half for the Brewers but Dion Charles got the Whites back on level terms.

Santos was on the wrong end of a late challenge in the first minute and Evatt says his ankle got progressively worse as the half went on.

When asked about the injury, the Bolton boss said: “We don’t know. It was a really bad tackle in the first minute of the game.

“It should have been a yellow card but wasn’t. Maybe you get a free hit in the first minute, I don’t know.

“It seems to have got progressively worse as the half went on. It looks to be his ankle joint, which isn’t ideal.”

Evatt was keen for a response from his side after their defeat against Wigan, and the boss admits there was a sense of frustration after the final whistle.

“For 20 minutes, they put us under pressure and we didn’t really make the right decisions,” he added. “We looked a bit nervy, which is understandable after last week. That really rocked us.

“Then we grew into it and got progressive better as the half went on. We created one or two opportunities.

“Second half, Rico going off isn’t ideal and we didn’t start the half well at all. We made a critical error in the first minute and gave them an opportunity.

“To be fair, after that we rallied and took over the game. We missed some really critical chances that should have put the game to bed.

“We know we can do better. I am pleased with the way they rallied because it would have been easy, going behind again, to feel sorry for ourselves.

“But we picked ourselves up and really grabbed hold of the game. The only frustrating thing is it’s a game we should have won.

Evatt made a triple change during the second half, with Josh Sheehan, Carlos Mendes Gomes and Cameron Jerome all joining the fray.

“Teams might start with the right attitude to press you intensely, but you can’t maintain that for 90 minutes,” Evatt explained.

“When they got tired, the spaces got bigger and we have the players to come on and take advantage of that. We should have taken advantage of that.

“I think we have had 17 shots and missed a couple of critical chances which have to be goals.

“It is frustrating because the only real chances they have had are from a mistake from Jack first half, a couple of set-plays – which is always going to be the way here – and then another bad mistake at the start of the second half.

“We seem to create our own mess at the moment, it was the same last week really. Wigan didn’t play through us or cut us open. It was all through our errors and we need to cut them out.”
