Former Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie declared bankrupt

Former England and Aston Villa footballer Lee Hendrie has been declared bankrupt.

A petition for bankruptcy was brought against the 34-year-old midfielder by HM Revenue and Customs on 19 December, the High Court was told.

The court heard that Mr Hendrie, who did not attend the hearing in central London, has not paid any of his debts.

He is now signed with Kidderminster Harriers and reportedly earned £24,000 a week at the height of his career.

The former Premier League player, who won his only England cap in 1998, has homes in Solihull, West Midlands, and Rowington, Warwickshire.

He was signed for Bandung FC in Indonesia in 2011 on a two-year contract but returned before the end of the year.

Hendrie has also played for Sheffield United, Leicester and Blackpool.

Mrs Registrar Derrett heard that there had been no contact from Hendrie, no letters had been returned and no payments made.

She said she was making the bankruptcy order "in the absence of any contact".

Seems odd he's not contacred anyone?

He was a very decent midfielder in his prime. I read somewhere that he had problems. Sad to see but he should have been more careful with his finances.

It is a little difficult to be sorry for someone who has made the sort of money he has in such a relatively short time, but no one likes to see people in difficulty.

Bloody hell didn't realise he was 34, a player I always thought could do well for us but seriously lost his way.

How a footballer on that sort of money becomes bankrupt is ridiculos.....same could be said for John Arne-Riise when he was at Roma I suppose.

I put it down to a combination of bad decision making, being poorly advised, being a bit of a big time Charlie, and being used by women.

Those of us who are single aren't, and unless we have someone fabulously wealthy in our midst, not to the tune of someone who has earned £5m over the last ten years.

Read this story in the Sun yesterday about Lee Hendrie being declared bankrupt, but the story underneath it was one about Trevor Francis's son being in court for stealing jewellery and designer clothing from Lee Hendrie's 1.7 million pound mansion. Think he has been declared bankrupt just because he couldn't be bothered turning up at court. He won't exactly be on the breadline.

But that is why it is so odd - he seems to have the money but won't pay his bills?

Maybe all his money is tied up in his property, or maybe he lived such a pampered lifestyle as a footballer with agents and club staff doing everything for him that he doesn't actually know how to pay a bill.

I'll bet the taxman had something to do with it - I can't imagine someone earning a fortune not suuting a wedge aside for their old age etc as a first priority. You'd have to be incredibly thick not to guarantee yourself financial security before anything else.

I heard that 70 year old Leonard Cohen was forced to make a new album (about death apparently - no shock there) because of bankruptcy which is amazing for a guy who has sold over 50 million albums and gets royalties on all his (thousands) of songs including that "Hallelujah" which has been covered by everyone and their dog.

Must be an unexpected tax bill.

Pulled up along side us in his Merc years back, we were in my mate's 1litre Punto, being the short prick he was he egged us on for a race. When the lights turned green we just sat there, probs smoking a j, laughing. What was the fucking point? I'll laugh harder when I see him selling third hand Puntos to make petrol money.
Also reports that he used to get his dick out in the cheesy clubs in the 'burbs, what a cock!
