Ian Evatt answers 'overseas interest' speculation on Adeboyejo 17676545

Wanderers have dismissed reports claiming that they have had enquiries from ‘overseas’ clubs for Victor Adeboyejo.

Ian Evatt laughed off the speculation after watching the Nigerian striker score his eighth goal of the season to beat Cheltenham Town at the Toughsheet Stadium last night.

It had been suggested that a foreign club had made contact after being impressed by the former Barnsley man’s performance against Luton Town in the FA Cup.

But Evatt is in no mood to consider letting his leave in January.

“It is news to me… Certainly not a call I have had!” he told The Bolton News.

“Victor is our player and will be staying with us, no question about that.

“We will be looking to add to that forward group and not deplete it.”

Adeboyejo scored his first goal of 2024 to sink the Robins and is growing into the role he is being asked to play for Wanderers, says Evatt.

“He took his goal really well, I am delighted for him,” the manager said.

“He is still improving and hasn’t played a large part of his career as a number nine, only six months at Burton and his time here. He is still learning his trade and getting better.”

Many who watched the game live felt that Bolton had been handed a real let-off after half time when George Lloyd’s goal was disallowed by referee Benjamin Speedie for offside.

Assistant, Joe Simpson, did not raise his flag until after his colleague had blown his whistle, which prompted a furious reaction from the visiting side.

It later emerged that defender Sean Long, not Lloyd, had been penalised as he blocked Bolton players from getting to the ball.

Evatt said: “It was a brilliant decision. Darrell at the time was furious because the player was actually onside. But it was the impacting defenders who were given offside, they blocked our defenders from recovering. They had impacted the action, so I thought that was a fantastic decision from the ref.”

Wanderers did feel they should have had a penalty in the first half during a scramble involving Dion Charles and three Cheltenham men.

“I think it was a penalty but we are not going to sit here and complain too much because there was an exceptional decision, without the use of VAR, to see that live is a really good call,” Evatt added.
