Wanderers kept their first clean sheet in nine league games to give themselves a defensive confidence booster ahead of Tuesday’s crucial match at Barnsley.
Joel Coleman had a straightforward afternoon against Cambridge United to register his own first clean sheet in the league since stepping in for the injured Nathan Baxter.
Though the visitors mustered just one shot on target, Ian Evatt said he was happy with other aspects of his goalkeeper’s performance.
He said: “It was a comfortable day for Joel but it then becomes about focus and concentration, positioning and defending of space and also his build-up and I thought he did that great.
“We have to give him belief and confidence. We have all got a part to play in that – myself, the players, the fans, just keep backing him and making sure he feels we support him.”
Wanderers suffered a heavy loss at Blackpool the previous Saturday and were hit with what Evatt referred to as a “sucker punch” in defeat at Wigan in midweek, having dominated the game for an hour.
Evatt was happy with the numbers at both ends of the pitch this time around.
“We haven’t conceded volumes of attacks, or lots of chances, we have just been punished for everything we do and sometimes you have runs in football like that,” he said.
“Keeping clean sheets is a big part of what we are, what we do, and we strangled them, made it very difficult for them.
“The numbers were good 23 shots, 11 on target, five and one for them, we just want to see more reward for that play. We scored two very good goals and should probably have had more.
“The win was the most important thing today and now we can focus on Tuesday.”
Paris Maghoma earned praise for his performance in midfield, the Brentford loanee creating the second goal of the day for Aaron Collins.
Evatt feels the youngster is now showing signs of getting back to his best form.
“It was a lovely pass and he has got real quality,” the manager said. “We are working hard on improving his numbers, productivity, and if he can do that then the world’s his oyster. He has got everything you need to be a top midfield player.”
