Bolton eyeing free agent signing over the international break 18491215

Wanderers hope to make one more signing over the international break after deciding against adding to their ranks on transfer deadline day.

Ian Evatt has confirmed the club has been in talks with an out-of-contract player and are looking to bring them into the club over the coming days.

Bolton have one slot left in the squad they submit to the EFL, having allowed Jack Iredale to leave for Hibs and Dan Nlundulu to join Cambridge United on loan for the season.

“We have targeted and highlighted somebody,” Evatt told The Bolton News. “There wasn’t a need to rush anything through on deadline day because he is obviously a free agent and we are not governed by the window on this one but we are hopeful early next week we will have some news.”

The departures of Iredale and Nlundulu were, says Evatt, partly down to the lack of guaranteed football they could offer.

Defender Iredale started the opening game of the season against Leyton Orient but with George Johnston now fit again, was unlikely to feature regularly.

Nlundulu had struggled to get into the matchday squad after returning from a hamstring injury at the back end of last season.

Evatt explained: “We have to balance in a couple of ways – balance finances and the books, but also the squad and make sure players understand where they sit within the squad. If they are not comfortable with that then they have to go out and play some minutes.”

Nlundulu will remain with Cambridge until the end of the season but his contract with Bolton runs until 2026.

He is likely to get a debut in the U’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy group game at Bromley on Tuesday night but Evatt insists there is still a future for him at Wanderers.

“It is not the end for him,” he said “He has had some misfortune and when he was getting going last season we started to see the real Dan. He got injured, it set him back, and he hasn’t quite returned to that same level yet.

“The idea is that he goes away and builds confidence in his body and performances and he can come back and help us. It is definitely not goodbye.”
