Then and now...

Five years ago yesterday we beat Athletico Madrid and went into the last sixteen of the UEFA Cup.

Now we are sixteenth in the Championship. How time flies.

I'll never forget those lovely police in Madrid.

Munich on the other hand had sensible police - best away trip ive ever been on, and no trouble.

They were attacking anyone who was English.

I remember at home when the Birmingham lot came to Burnden. They trashed the place, up turned cars, cars on fire etc. I would have been at school so we are going back 20 years or so.

I remember Birmingham coming in 94ish or something.

The game got switched to a Sunday because the police found out that trouble was planned.

About 100 of them came on manny road north. Birmingham scored and they all went mad. Then everyone steamed into them and it was carnage. They got smashed everywhere.

The same happened outside after the game when they called it on near The Wagon and Horses.

How did you see all this from a bush?

Waiting outside Trinity St Station for the opposition trains to arrive nearly always guaranteed problems. The one that stands out in my mind was the Luton train with 500 fans painted up a la Clockwork Orange.

Think of it the other way round - we were in the bottom division and now we're not.
