Barnsley boss David Flitcroft will decide early next week whether to offer
former Bolton Wanderers stalwart Ricardo Gardner a contract until the end of the season.
Jamaican international Gardner has trained at Oakwell this week and attended the Brighton game on Tuesday. He is 34 and has not played since October 2011.
He is a free agent after being released last summer by Bolton for whom he made more than 400 appearances. He has spent the last month training with West Ham.
Flitcroft told the Chronicle: “We’re looking at Ricardo but more importantly he’s looking at us. He was in my office after the game on Tuesday and he likes the atmosphere of the place. He was with the lads in the dressing room and he could be a good option for us.
“He’s played for West Ham in two under 21 games and is fit and ready.
We got a tip off from Sam Allardyce and Neil McDonald at West Ham that we might be able to have a look and I’ll decide on Friday.
“His experience and know-how could be vital in this challenge. "Age isn't on Ricardo's side so he won't be an ideal replacement for Scott Golbourne (Barnsley's first choice left-back who is injured for the rest of the season) but he could give us something different."
