Lived there for 2 years 1980 - 82 and had a great time. People tended to drink more and do more drugs in Saudi than they do here as there wasn't much else to do apart from go to the beach at weekends. My Geordie warehouse manager was almost busted at the airport smuggling booze out of S Arabia - he had 8 litres of siddiqui in water bottles as he loved the flavour so much.
Great place if you can be arsed to learn the language and mix with other people - shit place if you're a miserable Brit expecting everyone to speak English and behave like a Brit.
