Why so much space?

When I post my comments the box containing them is the right size. This is the case for some other posters as well, but some (you know who you are) have several inches of white space under their comments. Why? It's bloody annoying scrolling down through all this empty space!

I'm guessing it is because of the size of their avatar (picture) - ie if the size of post was limited to the actual text, the pictures would have to be 'squashed' - if that makes sense to you.

I can remove my avatar, if that helps.
