The Whites led courtesy of Chris Eagles’ second goal in as many matches with the hosts battling back to share the spoils when Craig Noone bent a free-kick past Adam Bogdan.
Following the game in the Welsh capital, the Bolton boss said: “I felt it was a fair result today, if Darren Pratley’s chance in the first half goes in it is 2-0 and the game would have been really on our side.
“We have also had to rely on a couple of fantastic saves from Adam Bogdan so on reflection a draw is a fair result.
“The way we set up in midfield allowed Darren Pratley to make runs forward on the counter attack and it worked.
“We prepared correctly, we knew before the game Cardiff possessed a lot of different qualities and were capable of putting in crosses from the wide areas.
“Our two centre halves and Adam Bogdan were fantastic and Josh Vela was immense, for such a young age to step in and show his maturity by tracking his runners so there were a lot of good performances.
“It was a wonderful goal by Chris Eagles. We analysed that before the game, we looked to work in the wider areas and cut the ball back and that is what happened for the goal.
“Fair play to Cardiff City, they made a couple of good substitutions at the right time and they had an impact.
“If anybody had said to me when I first got the job that our fate was in our own hands and we had to win our last game to get into the Play-Offs, we would have taken it.
“We are looking forward to next weekend’s game, we won’t change how we approach the game, and we are going to be looking forward to winning the game.
“We have won our last eight games at home which is a fantastic record and we want to finish with a win.
“What we have achieved so far is good and we have to make sure we finish a very good three months next weekend.”
