Newcastle United are interested in offering Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing the chance to join the club on a permanent contract after being impressed with his performances while on-loan at Bolton Wanderers.

The 24-year-old managed to force his way into the Liverpool first team under Kenny Dalglish but Brendan Rodgers clearly did not believe he had room in his squad for the midfielder and allowed him to join Bolton on a season-long loan.

Spearing has become a firm fan favourite at the Reebok Stadium and has already been named as Bolton's player of the year by two different supporters' groups.

The tough tackling midfielder has played a crucial role in helping Dougie Freedman's side push for a top six finish and a place in the play-offs, which could be confirmed if they could beat Blackpool at home on Saturday.

A broken toe will prevent Spearing from playing but he could return in time for the play-off final if Bolton manage to make it to Wembley.

Spearing still has one year left on his contract with Liverpool, but with the likes of Joe Allen, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson preferred by Rodgers, it is likely the club would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave.

The Guardian believes that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has monitored the form of Spearing and believes the midfielder would be the perfect player to add some much needed bite to his struggling side.

Should Newcastle manage to avoid relegation this season then it seems they will attempt to persuade Liverpool to part with the their former youth team captain.

Spearing has made a rather meagre total of 30 Premier League appearances in his Liverpool career but has been a near ever present for Bolton, playing 37 times in the Championship and scoring two goals.

His stance has changed regarding Liverpool and I heard him quoted that he was keeping an open mind on what may happen at the end of the season, if we manage to get promoted I think he would stay with us.

I can't see it myself. Spearing is a good player at this level, but Newcastle think they're the Barcelona of the North, can't see them signing a Championship player.

I think he is probably exactly what they need. He has grown in to a good player and with all his game time with us and will be far more confident now. It wouldn't surprise me if he has a good season in the prem.

Are Newcastle safe yet? Isn't there a possibility that they could still go down?

They could go down but I think Wigan are odds on.

Theyre far from safe, they are on 37 points along with villa and Sunderland. 5 points above Wigan but Wigan have a game in hand!
