Interested to see what Dougie decides to do with OCs signings when the summer sales start.
OC cleared out 15 players last year and I guess we're half expecting something similar this summer so in some respects it will be as interesting to see who Dougie keeps as who he dumps.
He has a dilemma. Our best players and loanees will be on their way I'd imagine - you know the ones that think they are too good for the Championship. At the same time there are a lot of players who many fans would like to see the back of because they're not good enough which when put together implies that we'll lose players at both ends of the ability spectrum.
The budget will be tight, but Dougie has to be brave and not be tempted to keep the dross.
I think most of us hope Dougie has an entire squad of bargain superstars up his sleeve, but that's not likely. I suspect he'll have to hang on to a core of low cost players and hopefully they will be the youngsters and that Dougie rates their prospects enough - and I expect Vela and Riley to step up next season, possibly others too.
My guess would be:
Holden - keep if we can
Eaves - keep
Wheater - keep
Mears - escorted off the premises and driven to Burnley
Ngog - cash in if possible
Ream - sell
Sordell - sell
Wylde - sell, even though we haven't really seen him properly
Andrews - definitely sell
Mills - sell
Lonergan - keep
Eagles - keep
Pratley - 50/50
McKee - dunno
I think that's all OCs signings that are still with us.
Question is whether Dougie will get rid just because he didn't sign them?

He didn't though - people keep banging on about this!

What happened was that those players came to the end of their contracts - he didn't sell anyone, or pay up their contracts to leave or anything. If you, me or Santa Claus were the manager at that time, we too would have 'cleared' out these 15 players too - Coyle only had to shake their hands on their way out of the door on the last day of the season - that's all he did!

Well not all he did, he signed Davies for another year and Knight for two!!

Thanks Owen you genius!

Think we can say farewell to Chungy, Ngog, Sordell, Mears, Mills, Mears, Andrews, and possibly Pratley, if I was Dougie I would want to pay Knight contract off, as for incomings would like to see Dwight Gayle, this Sainsbury, Dawson returning, and I think we would have the makings of a top side, with Holden fully fit, and Medo acclimatised we would have probably the best midfield in the division, but most importantly, we could have a full team of players that actually give a fuck for the first time in years.

We can't say farewell to anybody unless they are -

a - out of contract

b - another club wants them (and they want to go there) or

c - we pay up their contracts (which we won't).

Like them or not unless one of the above happens we are stuck with them until their contracts expire no matter how much we wish otherwise.

Sluffy - I know you like to take every opportunity to slam Coyle regardless of what the discussion is about, but could you answer the question?
It's about how do you think Dougie feels about these players and whether in rebuilding the team he would be prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater just because he didn't bring them to the club.
We all know what we feel about these players but that means jack shit - it's Dougie's opinion that counts and it's Dougie who has the responsibility to assemble next year's squad. So where do you think his head is at?
I think he's banking on Riley, Vela, Eaves and Mavies and hoping one or two others come through the ranks so won't buy as many as we might expect. I also think he rates a fair few of Coyle's signings and will keep them if he can.

You start from where you are.

Freedman is at a club who is £135 million in debt, who no longer have a chance at a return to the Premier next season, with three other clubs entering the division from the Premier - with their parachute payments, to add to the teams already there wanting to get out of the division to the riches of the top tier.

So the clubs debt will limit what budget he has to bring new recruits in, and the agents and players ambitions possibly seeing some of our better players (have we actually got any - our player of the season was not ours, neither our best defender either!) leave.

Unless Eddie Davies ploughs more of his personal wealth into the club - (as he got any left?) - then we won't be buying anyone of note, nor unless some club really does fancy paying us money for Sordell, Lee or Ngog and possibly the crocked Mavis - which I honestly doubt - then we won't be raising money in sales to buy players either.

No player on contract with us will be mad enough to voluntarily rip up their contract and walk away, so for better or worse we are stuck with them and they with us.

So players out of contract such as Alonso will go - unless we match or better what he has been offered and he wants to stay - and our new recruits will be frees, loans or bargain basement buys - but if he can't move anybody out then he will be limited how many he can bring in - because of the growth of the total wage bill - we can't afford to pay big wages to players who do not play.

I suspect Hall will be one of them - I can't understand why we got him on loan 'injured' otherwise, maybe even Butterfield the defender as well.

We obviously need strengthening in most areas of the pitch - obviously the defence needs to be sorted as a matter of urgency.

Whilst it may be fun to have a fantasy 'what would Freeman do now you think?' thread, it is all about the reality of the situation we find ourselves in that truly matters in how we intend to get out of the shit we find ourselves in - namely broke, competing with a number of other clubs - many in better financial shape then us - to get back to the wealth of the top division.

And I'm sure you know exactly who I blame for getting us in this mess in the first place is, don't you!

I have no great problems with those mentioned in earlier posts as leaving the club, although will be surprised if Chungy goes and also Eggnog who seems to be a Dougie favourite. Whatever happened to Wilde? He's clearly out of the picture not even appearing in the reserves!

As for Butterfield and Hall who were signed only because we were short in numbers for the run in at full back and winger. Well we've seen the last of Butterfield as he doesn't fit the `Young ang hungry` criteria. Maybe we were just having a look at Hall?

Budget? Well we did not spend all of last year,s parachute money and we will have the second year parachute money available before Eddie considers putting his hand in his pocket. Added to this any funds from sales and we may find a small war chest available....We hope!

The biggest mistake last year was giving Zat & SKD new contracts. And that's not hindsight...a lot on this board thought the same at the time. How many goals has Zat cost us and how many has SKD cost us.......think that just one or two more goals either scored or not conceded we would be in today.
Now the Doog seems to like Zat and will make him Captain to boot. So I would wager we have that weak link built in already for next season. I can't see who else could find another club....Eagles could do well elsewhere and Cavies would fit nicely at Sunderland or West Ham...some team like that.

The biggest mistake was not sacking Coyle earlier , if we had got rid we would be in the play-offs or even in the top two.

Dougie made a point last week that he could have spent more money in January but didn't want to risk it without seeing most of the players that he currently has at his disposal, so you'd think there would be abit of money available for us.

I think with the sales of some of the players, and the save on wages , DF will bring in some better players.

I wouldn't be losing any sleep over any that leave because none of them have have set this division alight and are therefore replaceable.
