Home Secretary Theresa May has announced that she is pushing through legislation that will ensure anyone who kills a police officer gets a life sentence without parole.

I applaud this new attitude to murderers, but why are we saying that if you kill a police officer you will spend the rest of your days in prison, but kill a child and you'll be let out.

Are police officers lives worth more than those of children?

What do you think of this move, are you behind proper life sentences that actually mean life?

It's the Police annual conference at Bournemouth this week. It is traditional for the Home Secretary to deliver a speech to the rank and file on the Wednesday morning.

Seeing how our Teresa has adopted a slash and burn policy by reducing numbers and altering their pensions she could be sure of a frosty reception from the boys in blue.

What a coincidence that today of all days she decides to make this headline grabbing announcement. This is nothing more than a cynical attempt to divert attention aware from the real issues involving the police.

It will all be forgotten about next week.

This.

It's disgraceful.

What's the difference , like Nat said in killing a policeman and killing a kid like has been on the news recently?

I thought we were one nation, shouldn't we all have the same importance in this barmy country?

If she's doing it, good, but do it with everyone not just policemen.

It's just a sound bite. Nothing more. It is up to the Judge if he chooses to set a whole life tariff.

A life sentence in the UK roughly means 14 years imprisonment but with good behaviour you can be released after completing two thirds of your sentence. Serial killers and child killers are nearly always given life imprisonment and the Judge has the power to decide how many years a convicted murderer must serve before he becomes eligible for parole. In the majority of cases the sentences range from twenty five and upwards to a full life time.

The latest proposal by the Home Office is simply a crock of insincere shit disguised with smoke and mirrors to give the impression they are tough on crime. Don't buy into it.

Years ago you got the death penalty for killing a cop, but not for lilling anyone else.

Many people were hanged for various murders before hanging was abolished.

Hopefully that one eyed cunt Dale Cregan will get the death penalty.

I don't think only people who kill police deserve it though.

That animal Stuart Hazell definitely deserves it.

All murderers used to be hanged - there was actually an 'Official Hangman', I think his name was Pierpoint. Then there were questions about Hanratty being guilty or not so people lobbied for the death penalty to be abolished. They changed it to only policemen (and I think traitors) but now it's nobody. Life in England now means on average 14 years - 21 years less 7 years for good behaviour.

Bring back the good old days.

There are dozens of evil men languishing in prison cells, who will never ever be released back into society. It would be far more cost effective to simply exterminate them and save the taxpayer a fortune.

The Americans have got it just about right. A lengthy period on death row followed by certain death. It may sound harsh but many of these lifers are monsters. If Robert Napper was ever to escape he would probably go on a killing spree until captured so I have no sympathy whatsoever.

I also think the person that killed the 75 year Asian man should be put down.

I'd bring it back for certain crimes. All paedos would get it.

Bring back the good old days.

It was the tragic case of Timothy Evans ( Rillington Place ) that finally tipped the balance against capital punishment.

Interestingly enough, Hanratty's body was exhumed last year and DNA confirmed that he was guilty.

Modern technology and advances in science have greatly reduced the chances of their being a miscarriage of justice. The evidence speaks for itself and the days of a confession being beaten out of someone ( Stefan Kiszko ) have long gone.
